The Nassau County Police Department reports that an Oceanside man was arrested last week on charges of selling drugs. According to police, Matthew Potts, 22, of Rebecca Lane in Oceanside, was observed by narcotics detectives in a street drug sale on Ayers Place and Sunnybrook Drive. Police say that when the detectives identified themselves and approached Potts, he put an unknown amount of pills into his mouth in an effort to destroy evidence.

Police say that when the detectives told Potts to spit out the pills, he refused and then punched one of the detectives in the head. Potts continued to fight, police say, attempting to bite them, until he was subdued with the assistance of other officers. Potts was transported to the hospital for evaluation. None of the officers sustained injuries. Police say that pills believed to be oxycodone were recovered at the scene.

Potts was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal sale of a controlled substance, tampering with physical evidence and resisting arrest. He was arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Aug. 28.
