Organizers: Annual Valley Stream charity walk a success

The sixth annual “Hope with Every Step” 5K Family Fun Walk was held on Sept. 24 at Arthur J. Hendrickson Park, and organizers were thrilled with the turnout despite unsightly weather conditions.

The fundraiser was more successful than previous years with all proceeds going toward research to find a cure for ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T), a rare fatal genetic disease that affects about 500 children in the United States and results in progressive loss of muscle control, immune system problems and a high rate of cancer. About 80 people participated in the walk, and nearly $22,000 was raised, eclipsing last year’s total of about $20,000.

“Overall it was really good, despite the weather,” said Claudia Diamond Rohlinger, a volunteer for A-T Children’s Project, a group that raises awareness for the disease and hosts fundraisers. “It was rainy and cold, but it was very successful.”

Rohlinger’s niece, Hazel, 9, is battling A-T and lives in Wisconsin. The walk started as a way to support Hazel and eventually more families got involved after their loved ones were diagnosed with the illness. This year’s event also was in support of Anthony Rivera, who passed away due to complications from the disease, and 17-year-old Matthew Zelen, who continues to battle the illness and was in attendance for the walk.

“The event has gotten a little bit bigger every year,” Rohlinger said. “And we’ve raised more money for it.”

Notable politicians in attendance included New York State Senator Todd Kaminsky (D) and Valley Stream Mayor Ed Fare. The event also had several sponsors, some of which have been with the walk since the first year.

“Everybody was upbeat and ready to go,” Rohlinger said. “They were very excited and happy to be a part of it.”
