O'side firefighters battle early morning blaze

About 60 firefighters responded to a Mott Street blaze in Oceanside early Friday morning after two pickup trucks caught fire outside of the Sanitation District No. 7 building and garage, according to Oceanside Fire Chief Kevin Klein.

The call came in at 3:08 a.m., Klein said, as firemen from all Oceanside companies arrived with eight vehicles and promptly extinguished the fire. The trucks — property of the sanitation district — were destroyed he added, and the adjacent sanitation garage suffered minor damage. There were no reports of injury.

Because the trucks had not been in use for roughly 12 hours prior to the incident, Klein said he had reason to believe the fire was suspicious and informed the Nassau County Fire Marshal, whose organization then took over the investigation.

The fire marshal’s office did not immediately respond to the Herald’s request for comment. The Herald will update this story.
