Parent University is a hit in Oceanside

The Oceanside schools Parent University, a first-of-its-kind workshop for parenting resources, held at the middle school on March 10 went successfully school administrators said, and provided residents with additional insight into raising a child in the digital age.

“It went even better than we hoped,” Diane Provvido, assistant schools superintendent said. “The parents were so thankful.”

The day, which ran from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., featured a number of workshop resources for those looking for guidance on a variety of modern parenting situations. Parenting educator and bestselling author Rosalind Wiseman served as the event’s keynote speaker.

Roughly 250 parents attended, Provvido said, and the feedback collected through surveys was generally positive. The most common critiques, she added, were requests for more parenting topics, as well as more time to explore the resources. “They wanted more time to learn,” she said.

Provvido said that while it was too early for specifics, using the feedback collected from this year’s Parent University, the schools plan to hold a similar event next year. “What we really want to do is something slightly different,” she said. “We’re taking the things that worked from the feedback we were given and add another element to it.”
