Patrick Day dies of brain injuries four days after fight against Conwell

Boxer Patrick Day died on Wednesday night after he was knocked out and suffered a traumatic brain injury on Oct. 12 in the 10th round of his U.S. Boxing Association super welterweight title fight against Charles Conwell at Wintrust Arena in Chicago.

Day’s coach, Joe Higgins, confirmed the death on Wednesday evening. Followed by boxing promoter Lou DiBella of DiBella Entertainment with a statement online.

According to DiBella, Day was surrounded by his family, close friends and members of his boxing team, including Higgins.

"On behalf of Patrick's family, team, and those closest to him," DiBella said. "We are grateful for the prayers, expressions of support and outpouring of love for Pat that have been so obvious since his injury."

Day's management said he was in “extremely critical condition” and in a coma at Northwestern Memorial Hospital after undergoing emergency surgery, but never woke up.

Day's family was not available for comment.
