A Long Beach bound train was delayed on the Long Island Rail Road bridge after a man passed out on the train tracks in Long Beach Wednesday evening, a Long Beach Fire Department official said.

According to Long Beach Fire Department Chief Rich Corbett, fire officials cut the power to the third rail after they were informed that an unidentified male subject was spotted on the tracks at the Long Beach LIRR station.

Corbett explained that standby units had just been released after firefighters extinguished a car fire on Shore Road earlier Wednesday evening. Long Beach firefighters were placed back on duty for the incident near the train station.

“As units were leaving the fire scene, we got a call for a male passed out on the tracks,” Corbett said, noting that a call came in at 11 p.m. for an “intoxicated person on the tracks.”

“We contacted the LIRR and made sure the power was shut off,” he said. “We located the victim — he was about 50-feet north from the train station. He was pretty far down the platform laying on the tracks.”

Corbett said that a medical assessment of the man was then done. “We did a lift job, secured him to what we call a Stokes basket, lifted him off the tracks, and brought him to South Nassau Communities Hospital.”

According to MTA spokesman Aaron Donovan, two trains were “impacted” because of the incident. A 9:53 p.m. train from Penn Station to Long Beach, and a 10:51 p.m. train from Long Beach to Penn Station, were both delayed for nearly a half hour.

Corbett said he was unaware of the person’s age and the extent, if any, of his injuries.
