Plans for 2nd Walk for Lyla announced

Posted

The Long Island Crisis Center in Bellmore announced this week that the Second Annual Walk for Lyla will be held June 12 at 11:45 a.m. at the Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve in Merrick. The walk is held annually in honor of Lyla Stern of Merrick, a 16-year-old Calhoun High School senior who died last year.

Two friends of Lyla, Christina Strezenec and Melissa Dileo, a Calhoun senior and junior, respectively, set up a charitable organization in memory of Lyla, called Love Your Life Always, or L.Y.L.A., to raise money to benefit the Crisis Center. Last year’s walk, held in May, attracted more than 120 walkers and raised an estimated $4,000.

In addition, Howard Stern, Lyla’s father, said a $1,000 scholarship has been set up at Calhoun in Lyla’s memory.
