A Long Beach man with a history of DWI convictions was arrested on Monday for several charges — including operating a motor vehicle without an interlock device and resisting arrest — and was hit with 21 vehicle and traffic law violations.

Timothy Schroeder, 38, of Long Beach, was arrested on July 25 on East Fulton Street. According to police, at 9:12 p.m. that day, a Long Beach police officer spotted a gray Acura heading west on East Park Avenue, while the driver, Schroeder, was on his cell phone. The officer stopped the Acura at Lincoln Boulevard and East Park Avenue, exited his vehicle and approached the Acura. That was when, police said, Schroeder drove off, and the officer returned to his car and gave chase.

Schroeder eventually stopped in front of 325 E. Fulton St., exited the car and fled on foot, police said. The officer gave chase, and caught up with Schroeder, and the two became involved in a struggle. Police said Schroeder resisted and fought with the officer.

Police said that as the struggle ensued, an unidentified good Samaritan who was nearby tried to help the officer. Soon after, three additional police officers—all of Long Beach—arrived on scene, and broke up the struggle. Schroeder was arrested soon after, police said.

“There are many DWI laws in place that are designed to reduce recidivism when it comes to DWI,” said Lt. James McCormack, commanding officer of the Long Beach Police Department’s Traffic Division in a statement. “Unfortunately there will always be those who continue to drink and drive.”

A later investigation revealed that Schroeder had three previous convictions for DWI. It was also discovered that his driver’s license was currently suspended, and he was required to have an interlock device in his vehicle.

Police said that in addition to being issued 21 summonses for both vehicle and traffic law violations, Schroeder was charged with DWI, first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, unlawfully fleeing a police officer while in a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle without an interlock device.

Schroeder was arraigned in Long Beach City Court before Judge Roy Tepper, who set bail at $100,000. Schroeder is due back in Long Beach City Court on July 28.
