Lighthouse

Project on thin ice?

‘Deadline’ passes; town seeks answers

Charles Wang’s “certainty date” came and went last Saturday, making the future of the Lighthouse project — and possibly the New York Islanders — less than certain.

Wang, who owns the Islanders, and co-developer Scott Rechler had asked the Town of Hempstead, which has zoning and environmental authority over the Lighthouse proposal, to give them a yes or no answer by Oct. 3. Otherwise, Wang said, he would “explore other options” starting Monday, which may include the possible relocation of his Islanders.

On Friday, Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray called the Islanders owner to discuss the project. Murray did not give Wang an answer during their conversation, and requested a meeting this week. In a phone interview with the Herald on Tuesday morning, Murray said she still expected a call from Wang to set up the meeting to discuss possible amendments to the proposal.

Murray said the town has three main questions about the Lighthouse plan that remain unanswered: the number of buildings in the proposal, the location and construction of wells for water, and whether enough funding has been secured for traffic mitigations.

“We will meet as soon as possible to talk about where we have areas of common interest,” Murray said, “and where we can negotiate to come up with a proper solution for this development.” Of Wang’s deadline, Murray said, “We don’t respond to hockey schedules. That has been our position throughout our whole process.”
