Khemchan Sulaiman, a Queens man, who was convicted of poisoning his daughter in 2011, was sentenced on April 24 in Nassau County.
County Court Judge Christopher Quinn sentenced Sulaiman, 48, of Jamaica, to 16 years in prison. In March, he pleaded guilty all charges: attempted murder- second degree, assault-first degree, two counts of assault-second degree, two counts of aggravated criminal contempt, two counts of criminal contempt-first degree and endangering the welfare of a child.
Passersby found both Sulaiman and his then 2-year-old daughter unconscious inside a parked Toyota Venza behind Amazing Savings discount store on Central Avenue in Lawrence on Oct. 3, 2011.
Police responded to the scene and found Sulaiman and the girl having trouble breathing. They were taken to St. John's Episcopal Hospital and were deemed critical. The child also recovered.
A pesticide known as Sevin was discovered by police on the car seat. Ammonium chloride, a toxic chemical used in fire extinguishers, was also found inside the toddler’s bottle in the car. Police arrested Sulaiman the following day.
“The crimes in this case are shocking, especially given that the victim was a young child that was completely unable to protect itself,” said Nassau District Attorney Kathleen Rice. “This sentence ensures that this defendant will be in prison for a long time, where he will no longer be a danger to innocents.”
