Rally at Rockville Centre AvalonBay turns ugly

Extra police called to control large union protest that got heated

Posted

A crowd of union demonstrators that police estimated at about 350 staged an angry protest at the AvalonBay construction site on Banks Avenue on March 30. Setting up four large inflatable union rats, the crowd was protesting the use of non-union workers at the site — as they had on several other occasions in Rockville Centre.

Village police officers had to call for additional assistance from Nassau County police after the demonstrators, who paraded past King Kullen to Sunrise Highway and then back to the construction site just north of the Long Island Railroad tracks, got into a heated confrontation with AvalonBay workers and management.

According to police, there were angry words, some pushing and shoving and rocks were thrown, breaking the window of the security booth at the site of the high-end rental units that are scheduled to open later this spring, causing an estimated $100 in damage.
