Red Cross declares WHHS emergency shelter

As Hurricane Irene made her way to Long Island's shores Saturday night, the Red Cross opened West Hempstead High School as an emergency shelter for thousands of people who were evacuated from their homes.

The high school was designated as the county's first kosher disaster emergency shelter in December. It was created specifically for the very large orthodox community of the Five Towns area, which is particularly vulnerable to flooding in the event of a major hurricane.

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano ordered a mandatory evacuation of the entire county below Sunrise Highway.
