Residents eat a wing, save a breast at annual fundraiser

More than 100 people took part in Maple Pointe Assisted Living’s seventh annual Wing-Off on Oct. 18, as they buzzed from table to table trying local businesses’ tasty creations. The event raised about $3,000 for South Nassau Communities Hospital’s breast cancer program.

The center has raised about $75,000 for the program over the years, according to Tammy Marshall, Maple Pointe’s executive director. It has garnered $8,000 so far this month from various efforts, and hopes to eclipse last year’s total of $17,500 with the help of its Bowling for Breasts event at Maple Lanes RVC on Nov. 1.

Residents in attendance voted on their favorite wings, with the top three finishers — out of about 10 total — hailing from Copper Pot Chicken Company, Happy Hostess and Kasey’s Kitchen.

“We do this every year and it has gained momentum every year,” Marshall said. “I just love to see the restaurants show up and donate their time and their wings and their recipes and do this just for a cause. It warms my heart to see how the community all comes together to do this.”
