Road project on tap for Atlantic Beach

The Village of Atlantic Beach is planning road repairs late this year and is hoping Nassau County will chip in with some of the costs.

Atlantic Beach Mayor Stephen Mahler said he has a goal of making improvements to Atlantic Boulevard, which serves as a gateway to Silver Point Beach Club. Since Silver Point Beach Club is located on county-owned property, Mahler is hoping for some assistance from the county to pay for the road improvements. "I think [the county] should bear some of the responsibility because the road goes to their property, which they make money on,” said Mahler. “It would only be fair for the county to do their part.”

Nassau County Legislator Denise Ford (R-Long Beach), whose district encompasses Atlantic Beach, said she would like to see if the county can provide any funding for the road improvement project. “I'd like to discuss it with [Mayor Mahler] to see what we can do to help,” said Ford. “I will definitely look into this.”

Mahler said he would like to see repairs on Atlantic Boulevard done in the spring and fall to avoid interfering with the busy summer season. The project would also involve making improvements to Ocean Boulevard, which is parallel to the village's numerous beach clubs. The project is estimated to cost around $1 million, according to Mahler.

“[Atlantic Boulevard] needs a a whole overhaul,” said Mahler. “We're going to do extensive repairing.”

The planned improvements to Atlantic Boulevard come a year after the village repaired all of Pacific Boulevard. The village also recently made improvements to Erie and Fulton Streets. To pay for the road improvement projects the village issued a bond last year.
