Rocks roll to win No. 10

The East Rockaway Rocks continued their winning ways with a 62-32 road win over Clarke in a Nassau Conference ABC-VI boys’ basketball game last Friday night.

Senior guard Joe Todero scored 13 points, 11 of which came in the first quarter, as the Rocks ran out to a 25-5 lead after eight minutes. Senior Dylan Giliberti led all scorers with 14 points. Todero was 3-or-4 on three-point attempts in the opening quarter. With the win, the first-place Rocks improved to 10-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play.

Coach Joe Lores is happy with the progress the team has made. “We’re playing good basketball,” Lores said. “What’s really been nice is that it hasn’t been just one or two guys getting it done. It’s been a team effort. We have a long way to go in the season, but I’m pleased with the way things are going for us thus far.”

This game figured to be a mismatch. The Rocks, winners of six straight, were facing the winless Rams. With Giliberti, Todero and senior guard David Blessington (10 points, three assists) leading the way, the Rocks took a commanding 44-15 lead to the locker room at the half, and then breezed to the 30-point win over the undermanned Rams. Sophomore Michael Lores and senior Gerard Jonas paced the scoring off the bench with eight and six points, respectively.

After going 6-1 in non-league games the Rocks opened the conference schedule with a 63-38 victory over Carle Place. Junior Mike Castellano scored 11 points, and freshman guard David McClure added nine.

The Rocks then traveled to Wheatley for a match up with the Wildcats. Todero, who leads East Rockaway with an average of 18.6 points per game, scored 19 points, and Lores added 12 off the bench as the Rocks prevailed 57-39. Blessington had an outstanding game with 11 points, three steals and three assists.

Next up was a tough Mineola team. The Rocks got off to a great start, and then held on to knock off the Mustangs, 77-64. Todero scored 26 points, while Giliberti added 21 points and five rebounds. Sophomore forward Danny McClure gave the Rocks a boost off the bench with four points and four assists.

With a win over second-place Plainedge this week, the Rocks have an opportunity to take a commanding two-game lead in the conference.

Lores hopes East Rockaway can keep giving the same effort for the balance of the schedule. “We’re obviously playing well and getting wins, but we can’t afford a letdown,” he said. “Teams will be gunning for us in the second half. We’re going to need to keep up the intensity and finish up strong.”
