Free speech, language, hearing screenings

Molloy College’s Speech Language & Hearing Center is offering free speech-language and hearing screenings

Women's community seder

Join the WRJ Sisterhood of Temple Am Echad, Women of the Reconstructionist Temple Beth Emeth, Sisterhood of Hewlett East Rockaway Jewish Centre, Sisterhood of Central Synagogue and members of the National Council of Jewish Women - South Shore and Peninsula sections for a community celebration at a joint women’s seder on April 7 at 6:15 p.m. at Central Synagogue, 430 DeMott Ave. The cost of $32 per person includes a kosher dinner. Art exhibition and lecture

Molloy's Art Gallery will exhibit still life masterpieces entitled “Food For Thought” in honor of Earth Month. As part of its Sustainability Institute events, illustrations of some masterworks will be exhibited from April 1 - 30. Artists include DaVinci, Caravaggio, Warhol and Renoir. The exhibition will include a lecture by Marna Chester from Pratt Institute on April 7 at 2:30 p.m. with a reception and Q&A to follow. "La Traviata" at the Church of the Ascension

The Footlight Players, a local opera company presents Giuseppe Verdi's opera, "La Traviata," to be performed live at the Church of the Ascension, 71 North Village Ave. The performances are on April 8 and April 9 at 7:30 p.m. each night. All of the singers are local talent, and most have attended prestigious music schools including the Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music. This is a wonderful opportunity for residents of Rockville Centre to see and hear a live performance of opera without going into the city. The cost is $12 per person in advance and $15 at the door.

'Birth, Baby and beyond' at Mercy

Mercy Medical Center invites men and women who are planning a family,or are already expecting, to a day-long educational seminar on April 9. The 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. pregnancy conference will feature exhibits, workshops and presentations by physicians, nurses and staff addressing various aspects of childbirth, including labor, delivery, breast feeding and parenting. Workshop presentations will include information on pain management during labor, basics of newborn care, nutrition during pregnancy and lactation, car seat safety and a “Daddy Boot Camp.” Registration of $10 per person or $15 per couple includes continental breakfast and lunch, along with free raffles, give-aways and door prizes. Newcomers Progressive Dinner

On April 9 at 7 p.m. the Newcomers Club will host a progressive dinner with couples travelling to different houses in the village to eat and drink and make new friends in town. Bunny Brunch

On April 9 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Molloy College will host a Bunny Brunch with face-painting, coloring, games, arts & crafts and photos with the Easter Bunny.

Outside Easter egg hunt (weather permitting). Bagels, muffins, donuts, coffee/tea and juice will be served.

92nd Street Live: Shirley MacLaine — Life Lessons

The public is invited to a Live from the 92nd Street Y program at Temple B'nai Sholom at 8 p.m. to hear MacLaine talk about her life lessons and what she wants to impart to the world. MacLaine is an Oscar, Golden Globe and Academy Award-winning actress who is also the author of 10 best sellers. Her most recent is "I'm Over All That (And Other Confessions)" in which she surveys her life and universe and shares her opinions and insights. Tickets for this event only are $15. Molloy College Irish Institute

"Rock and Read" with Larry Kirwan of Black 47 on April 12 at 7 p.m. in Molloy's Multipurpose Room, Wilbur Arts Center. The event is free and open to the public. Kirwan, a rock and roll poet, will share songs and stories with an appreciation of Irish heritage. Nassau Woman's Club

The club's next meeting on April 13 at 12:30 p.m. at the United Church of Rockville Centre will feature a display and commentary about dolls collected from all over the world. The public is invited to come and enjoy dessert and coffee with club members. They will also be conducting donations for their yearly drive of donations of newborn baby items for "Children Of Hope-Safe Haven."

KinderPrep open house

On April 13, St. Mark’s Cooperative Nursery School will hold an open house for information regarding its KinderPrep class. This class is designed for Kindergarten-eligible children who are not yet ready to attend a full-day school program. RVC Auxiliary Spring luncheon

The Rockville Centre Auxiliary cordially invites residents to attend a Spring Luncheon and Fashion Show on April 14 at noon, at the Pompei Restaurant in West Hempstead. Tickets are $35 and will include a charitable contribution to the (AHRC) Nassau to enrich the lives of both children and adults with developmental disabilities. Panel discussion: The legal perspective of teens in today's world — Avoiding recipes for disaster

Molloy College Irish Institute

"A Glorious History of Irish Warriors in America: The Fighting 69th," a history of the Fighting 69th will be presented, including a moving story of one of its bravest, killed on the battlefields of Europe during World War I, by his descendants, who recount their trip to Ireland and France to commemorate his service. The event, free and open to the public, will take place on April 17 at 3 p.m. in Molloy's Multipurpose Room, Wilbur Arts Center. The presenters will be: Prof. Charles F. Howlett, Associate Professor, Molloy College, the Hon. John Ingram, New York Supreme Court, and Lt. Col. Martin J. Ingram, USAF (Ret), administrator, FAA. Fortnightly Club

On April 19 the Fortnightly Club welcomes Robert T. Spiotto, artistic director, Performing/Community Arts Program at Hofstra University. Spiotto will present, Artwords: The Poetry of Michelangelo in performance. The meeting will begin at 1:30 p.m. at St. Mark's Methodist Church on Hempstead Avenue. Visitors are welcome.

Appraisal Day at RVC Museum

Come to a one-day event on May 1 from 1-4 p.m. at the Museum of the Village of Rockville Centre at the Phillips House, 28 Hempstead Ave. and have your antiques and collectibles appraised. Appraisals will be conducted by Phillip Weiss, who appears on "Antiques Road Show" and Rosario DiBenedetto, a local estate liquidator. There will be a charge of $10 for one item and $25 for three items (which includes a one-year membership to the museum). All proceeds will benefit the museum. Refreshments will be served. RVC Reads! The library invites one and all to participate in a community-wide “read” during the month of April. Individuals and book clubs, why not read one of Bohjalian’s titles? No club? No problem! The library's got five! Come in for a visit and take a look.

Need homework help? Homework Helpers, a partnership program between the Sandel Senior Center Service Corps and the Rockville Centre Public Library offers help with homework to students in grades 1-6 every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday between the hours of 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. in the. Children’s Room of the Library. For further details, contact librarians in the Children’s Room at (516) 766-6257.

The Library’s Career Center is open Saturdays. Five computers available for job search needs. All computers are equipped with Win-Way Resume Preparation software, MS Word and Office programs. Display Cases

Accessories by Jill McManus

Accessories by Jill McManus will be featured throughout April. McManus graduated from South Side High School and received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Rhode Island. Upon graduation she pursued a career in television and media in New York City until multiple sclerosis made commuting problematic. She began to re-explore her artistic interests, including crochet and jewelry making. Today her main focus is on one-of-a-kind jewelry and hair accessories many incorporating vintage or antique buttons, discarded materials, silver, and semi-precious stones. McManus particularly enjoys recycling forgotten or discarded pieces into new and functional pieces of accessory art.

Christine Verga Maday's watercolors have been printed on greeting cards, gift wrap, gift bags, textiles and posters. She has received both local and national recognition including an award from The Decorative Artist’s Workbook magazine for greeting card design. Recently the artist’s watercolors were included in Artist’s Sketchbook and The Northlight Bookclub magazine. Nursery School Openings

Registrations are now being accepted for the RVC Recreation Center's nursery school programs for the 2011-2012 school year.

Pre-K classes for those entering kindergarten in September 2012 are offered five days a week from 9 to 11:30 a.m. or three days a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) from 12:15 to 2:45 p.m.

Pre-Pre-K for those entering kindergarten in September 2013 are offered four days a week (Monday through Thursday) from 9 to 11:30 a.m. or two days (Tuesday and Thursday) from 12:15 to 2:45 p.m.

All participants must be registered members of the Recreation Center for the 2010-11 year. A parental permission slip and appropriate fee for each event must be submitted to the recreation office prior to the day of the trip or activity.

Roll Around Play Days

The Roll Around gymnastics set-up will be available to parents and children ages 1 -4 from 9 to 10:30 a.m., April 18 to 23 and April 25. Fee is $8 per family per session. Adults and children must wear sneakers; older siblings may not play on the equipment.

Recess Gym and Gameroom Schedule

The open gym and game activities include basketball, Xbox, and ping pong under the supervision of the recreation staff. All participants must have a valid Rec Center card and wear sneakers.

The program runs April 18 through April 23 and April 25, 12:45 to 4:30 p.m. for grades 4-12 and 7:30 to 10:15 p.m. for grades 6-12.

Tennis Courts Opening

The Har-Tru courts adjacent to the Rec Center are tentatively scheduled to open in late April.

Courts are available seven days a week from 8 a.m. until dark. All players must register and pay a fee.

AARP Tax Assistance Program:

Representatives from the AARP Tax Assistance Program will be at the Sandel Senior Center every Friday morning from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. You must make an appointment by calling the Sandel Senior Center at (516) 678-9350. This service is available to RVC Seniors who are 60 years of age and older.

Friday mornings at 10:30 a.m. This Latin-inspired calorie burning dance fitness call is designed to “Party You” into shape.

Spring Flea Market

April 8 at 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Many unique household items as well as clothing new & costume jewelry and books will be sold. Donations from the community are greatly appreciated. Please hold all donations until the week of April 4.

Easter/Passover Luncheon

April 20 at noon. The traditions of both holidays will be celebrated at this luncheon featuring favorite foods from our Easter and Passover tables. $5 per person ($6 at door).

Monte Carlo Casino Night

April 30 at 7:30 p.m. This fundraising event includes open bar, hors d’oeuvres, dinner, entertainment and complimentary gaming chips. Tickets are $50 per person.

Sandel Senior Men’s Club

The club meets the first and third Tuesday of every month at 10 a.m. for breakfast and business. At 11 a.m., when available, guest speakers discuss topics of interest to men. A variety of trips and programs are scheduled. Check with the center for a schedule.

Social Work Services

Social Work Supervisor, Wendy Weinstock, MSW, is available for private consultation on a range of Social Work services such as housing and transportation, as well as individual and group counseling. Call Wendy at (516) 537-1162 for an appointment.

Special religious events

The public is invited to a series of free Lenten programs at the United Church of Rockville Centre, 430 Morris Ave. on the theme “From Nomads to Pilgrims” with a series of sermons at its 10:30 Sunday worship service followed by discussion. On April 10 the topic will be “Grieving as Spiritual Quest.” Each Monday evening at 7:30 p.m., the Lenten theme will be explored further by Bible study, readings in contemporary literature, psychology and Zen.
