92nd Street Y

The congregation of B'nai Sholom Beth David, 100 Hempstead Ave. kicks off its Spring 2012 program of simulcasts from the 92nd Street Y on Feb. 2 at 8 p.m. with Lawrence Summers and Thane Rosenbaum. As economic concerns weigh heavily on Americans’ minds, Summers shares his thoughts on the debt and housing crisis, the collapse and bailout of Wall Street, the economic stimulus initiatives, free trade, globalization, anti-Semitism and perhaps even the upcoming presidential election. Summers was director of President Obama’s National Economic Council, Secretary of the Treasury in the Clinton administration, and former president of Harvard University. Thane Rosenbaum is a novelist and law professor at Fordham University and the director of the Forum on Law, Culture and Society. Tickets are $15 for a single admission; $36 for three, and $65 for six admissions ($50 for members of B'nai Sholom and Central Synagogue). Coffee and cake are included. "From My Hometown" —

at Molloy's Madison Theatre

On Feb. 2 and 3 at 8 p.m.; Feb. 4 at 2 and 8 p.m. and on Feb. 5 at 3 p.m. the Madison Theatre at Molloy College presents "From My Hometown." Circa 1980, three soul singers pack their bags and leave their hometowns for the world-famous Apollo Theatre. Each seeks escape from poverty, leaving behind family and a hometown sweetheart. Enjoy classic R&B hits including “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay,” “Working in a Coal Mine,” “Lonely Teardrops,” “Try a Little Tenderness,” and many more. Tree of Life Yoga

Central Synagogue, 430 DeMott Ave. is again sponsoring a Winter "mini" session, with evening classes of yoga. The classes are open to yoga students of all levels. The Tree of Life Yoga will be offering a series of six classes each that began on Jan. 3 at 6 p.m. The series of classes is available for $75 or you may pay as you go for $15 a class. Free Tax Assessment Workshop

Nassau County Legislator Joe Scannell invites you to learn about the process of property valuation and how to file an appeal of the assessed value of your property if you disagree with your most recent assessment. On Feb. 6 from 7-8:45 p.m. he will be at the Rockville Centre Public Library, 221 N. Village Ave., with a representative from the Nassau County Assessment Review Commission who can provide further information about assessments and answer any questions. On Feb. 6 at 8 p.m., Congregation B'nai Sholom Beth David presents Mandy Patinkin with Thane Rosenbaum. Patinkin’s career encompasses theater, film, television, recordings and the concert stage. His Broadway credits include "Evita," "The Secret Garden," "Sunday in the Park with George" and solo concerts. He appeared in more than 20 feature films, multiple television series and has made numerous solo recordings. Fortnightly Club

On Feb. 7, the Fortnightly Club will present the Chordalairs, a woman's singing group. The meeting, which will begin at 1 p.m., will take place at the United Church of Rockville Centre on Morris Avenue. The program is being introduced by Lesia Shmorhun, co-chairperson of the Music Committee. Visitors are welcome.

St. Agnes Cathedral School gala

The annual ball, with food and live music is set for Feb. 11 at the Garden City Hotel. The evening honors community members who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to Catholic education and recognizes an educator for outstanding service. Honorees include Hugh and Peggy Finnegan who will receive the St. Catherine of Siena Award for commitment to Catholic education; Gerald McTague who will receive the St. Thomas Aquinas Award for ongoing support of Catholic education and Catherine Fitzgerald, who will receive the Elizabeth Anne Seton Award for dedicated service to Catholic education. Fortnightly Club

Defensive Driving Course

RVC Education Foundation gala

The annual gala, the foundation's major fundraiser, is set for March 3 at the Garden City Hotel. Board of Education Vice-President Mark Masin is the honoree, South Side High School Assistant Principal and I.B. Coordinator John Murphy will receive the Ruth Fins Memorial Award. Tickets for the gala are $150 per person and include dinner, drinks, dessert and dancing. There will be a silent auction that evening, with details to follow. Homework Helpers, a partnership program between the Sandel Senior Center Service Corps and the Rockville Centre Public Library offers help with homework to students in grades 1-6 every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday between the hours of 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. in the Children’s Room of the Library. Paintings by Diane Meeker

Meeker loved painting and drawing when she was a child, and her efforts won her accolades and awards in high school. She married young, however, and put her artistic endeavours aside while raising her family. Taking inspiration from Grandma Moses, who started painting later in her life, Meeker returned to pursue her talents as a mature artist.

As a mother of two grown children and four wonderful grandchildren, she enjoys painting in both acrylics and watercolors. The artist can be reached at (516) 708-5101.

Suburban Art League Annual Show

The suburban Art League was established in 1963 to increase cooperation among artists, art students, craftsmen, publishers, and all engaged in artistic pursuits;and to provide a registry for artists. The League hosts competitions and exhibits and promotes the study of art through monthly art demonstrations for both members and non-members at the Syosset Woodbury Community Center in Woodbury on the first Tuesday of every month except July and August.

2012-13 Nursery School Registration

Registrations are now being accepted for the RVC Recreation Center's nursery school programs for the 2012-2013 school year.

Pre-K classes for those entering kindergarten in Sept. 2013 are offered five days a week from 9 to 11:30 a.m. or three days a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) from 12:15 to 2:45 p.m.

Pre-Pre-K for those entering kindergarten in September 2014 are offered four days a week (Monday through Thursday) from 9 to 11:30 a.m. or two days a week (Tuesday and Thursday) from 12:15 to 2:45 p.m.

Spring Program Registration

Registration for spring programs will begin on Feb. 13 for residents and Feb. 20 for non-residents. Detailed flyers describe a wide array of activities offered by the Rec. Department for toddlers through senior citizens, including Happy Piano, Mad Science, Schoolhouse Chess, yoga for special needs, ice skating and guitar lessons.

February Recess Events

Detailed flyers are available describing recess activities Feb. 19 through 26. They will also be printed in an upcoming issue of the Herald. Events will include bus trips, sports days, the Annual Cherry Pie Eating Contest, open gym, Roll-Around and more.

All trip and activity participants must be registered members of the RVC Parks and Recreation Department for the 2011-2012 year. To register, a parental permission slip and the appropriate fee must be submitted to the Rec Center office PRIOR to the day of the event.

Connor and Friends

The fall/winter play group for children with special needs is scheduled from 2:30 - 4 p.m. on Sundays, Feb. 12, Feb. 26, March 11, March 25 and April 15. Playtime is one hour, followed by light snacks and refreshments. Free, but reservations are necessary. Contact Marianne or Paul Lawless at mplawless@verizon.net.

Men’s Softball

The Recreation Department currently has spring softball information available for men’s teams. The completed rosters with all fees are due February 13. Games are tentatively scheduled to begin the week of March 25

Spring Shape-up

Square dancing with nationally known caller Lee Kopman, Monday and Tuesday evenings from 7 to 8:30 and 8:30 to 10. $7 per person.

Co-ed cardio workout with Nancy Codispoti on Mondays (Step Aerobics), Tuesdays (CCW) and Thursdays (CCW) from 7 to 8:15. Pay as you go for $5 each session.

Zumba exercise to a Latin beat with Ruth Karhu meets Monday mornings, Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. Pay as you go for $5.00 each session.

The weight room at the Rec is available to adults seven days a week. The room features a treadmill, recumbent bike, rowing machine, Stairmaster and Arc Trainer, as well as free weights, Cybex machines and a bench cage. Monthly usage fee is $30 for residents, $35 for non-residents. Call Joe Nemeth at 678-9339 for information.

Winter Program Recreation

The winter program season begins this week. Flyers are available at the Rec Center.

Birthday Parties and Rentals

The Rec Center offers age-appropriate birthday parties to Village residents for pre-school and elementary age children, seven days a week. All parties include an organized activity followed by refreshments and celebration time in the party room. Call (516) 678-9338 or 9339

Open Gym Program

The main gymnasium of the Rec. Center will be open for free-play basketball for grades 4 and up on Saturday afternoons from 2-4:30 p.m. The evening open gym for grades 6 and up is open from 7:30 to 10:15 p.m. Valid Recreation Cards for 2011-2012 are required.
