On the second day of the early-summer heat wave, Rockville Centre has two cooling centers open, at the Recreation Center, 111 North Oceanside Road and at the Sandel Senior Center, 50 South Park Avenue.

The village sent out the advisories to the residents of Rockville Centre via the Swift 911 telephone, text and email system on Wednesday, June 20.

Noting that excessive heat and humidity are expected through Friday, the advisory provided tips on how to stay cool and healthy in he heat. To avoid heatstroke or dehydration, the advisory reads, residents should stay out of the heat, use fans and air conditioners to cool their rooms and drink plenty of fluids, especially water.

"Monitor your children and check on your elderly neighbors to make sure they are all right," the advisory said. "If you need emergency assistance, call the Rockville Centre Police Department using 911."

A second advisory urged residents to monitor their power usage to help avoid any outages.

"Turn off all unnecessary lighting, appliances and electronic equipment," the advisory reads. "Try to use only the water and air conditioning that you need to keep cool during the heat wave."
