Rockville Centre's Wilson school students present 'Mythological Magic'

Audience members who saw the recent performance of "Mythological Magic" by Wilson Elementary School’s Drama Club say it was an outstanding success. The musical is based on six Greek myths: Origin of the Seasons, Midas, Echo and Narcissus, Arachne and Atalanta’s Running Race. The initial premise for the musical was that three modern day children go into the woods and find a magical door that takes them into the world of ancient Greek mythology.

Ninety-six students in grades 3 through 5 performed the play, which is an original musical score and lyrics by Wilson teachers Anna Eliasbonet and Viri Pettersen.

The actors were trained in voice, enunciation and stage presence with the assistance of speech teacher Carla DelliCarpini. The students who functioned as the stage crew learned how to use the sophisticated sound board system and the stage lights. Students also designed and painted scenery, and parents were involved with making costumes, makeup, prop design and choreography.

Rockville Centre’s sixth grade history curriculum centers around ancient history and includes a unit on Ancient Greece. Teachers said participants in the production learned lessons about that topic, and will be better prepared for learning within the creative venue.
