RVC gymnasts compete at Rec Center

Posted

For the past two years, the Rec Center has been the home of a competitive gymnastics program for grades one through eight, and it is beginning to draw a lot of attention.

Ginger Creegan, the deputy superintendent of Parks and Recreation, oversees the program, which has come out of a long standing gymnastics program at the center. Her staff of professionals help coach the teams, which participate in the Long Island Independent Gymnastics League against other teams from Huntington and Great Neck. Rockville Centre’s competitors are known as the RVC United Team (with 12 members) and the RVC Ultimate Team, consisting of 10 athletes. The Rec Center also sponsors a developmental team, the Rising Stars, as well as a large recreational gymnastics program for boys and girls.

The gymnastics season runs from now until the championships in June. On Saturday, Feb. 5, the Rockville Centre teams squared off in a meet at the Rec Center.

“Adding the competitive teams to our already popular recreational gymnastics program has been such a huge success and it is amazing what our gymnasts have accomplished in a short period of time,” said Creegan.
