A man from Rockville Centre was driving a truck on a Texas highway while allegedly using crack cocaine, according to police.

On Dec. 21, police stopped a white 18-wheeler truck that was recklessly driving on Highway 377 toward Early, Texas.

The driver, Joseph Calhoun Jr., 48, of Rockville Centre, appeared to be sweating, dazed and somewhat sluggish in his responses. He told the Early Police Department that he was a diabetic and he would be okay after he rested. The Early Fire Department checked Calhoun’s blood sugar levels and found that they were normal.

Further investigation of the truck found an open container of alcohol and a crack pipe with a small amount of crack cocaine inside. Calhoun was arrested and charged with Driving While Intoxicated and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He was taken to Brownwood Regional Medical Center for a blood sample and then booked into the Brown County Jail.

The Texas Department of Public Safety will test the “suspected crack cocaine” for analysis, and a warrant for possession of a controlled substance will be sought after results from the lab are received. Results were still pending as of press time Tuesday.
