Scholarship Fund Helps OHS Grads Defray College Costs

Approximately 12 to 15 high school students each year receive a boost in paying for college thanks to the Oceanside Scholarship Fund, which has been helping fund college scholarships for nearly 70 years.

Danielle Accomando and Antoinette Alvezio, two OHS seniors who’ve volunteered to make phone calls soliciting donations for the fund this past week. Danielle and Antoinette are close friends and have been involved in other fundraising efforts including Battle of the Classes when Danielle was freshman captain and the Cancer Awareness Club, for which Antoinette helped design shirts for its apparel sale.

“I feel like we all come together as a community in tough times,” said Danielle, recalling that after Hurricane Sandy, one of her teachers had come knocking on her door to see if her family needed any assistance.

Fifteen to twenty students made the phone calls during the phone-a-thon.
