Seaford rushes past Malverne

Seaford’s running back duo of sophomore Brian Falk and senior Aiden Calvacca proved lethal in last Friday night’s road game at Malverne with first place on the line. The duo combined for 306 yards in a commanding 31-7 win that positions Seaford for the top seed in the Nassau Conference IV football playoffs.
“We feel like we have two really good running backs in Calvacca and Falk so it is tough to key on one,” third year Seaford head coach Mike Corcoran. “It took awhile to get it going but the line started to get a good push going in the second half against a tough defense to run on.”
The win moved Seaford to 6-1 with one game remaining. Malverne, which was down three key players, dropped its second straight to fall to 5-2.
After leading 7-0 at halftime, the Seaford ground game took over in the second half to help the Vikings dominate time of possession. Falk finished with 206 yards and Calvacca amassed 100.
Falk capped off an extended opening drive to open the third quarter with a 39-yard touchdown on a double reverse for a 14-0 lead.

After Malverne answered with a 68-yard kickoff return touchdown from Isaiah Jolly, Seaford seized momentum back on the ensuing drive capped by a Tim Navin one-yard touchdown run. A Dan Barone 55-yard interception return then set up a 27-yard field goal from Jake Anzelone for a 24-7 lead. Barone then capped off the scoring with a nine-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter.
Seaford’s defense, which shut out Malverne’s offense, was led by 12 tackles from Falk, 11 by Calvacca and 10 from Devin O’Donnell. Senior defensive lineman Anthony Janes also recorded a sack.
“I was happy with the way we tackled and how focused we were,” Corcoran said of his defense. “They have a lot of firepower.”
Malverne was without star wide receiver Josiah Brown after the Penn State commit suffered a season-ending knee injury in a 21-14 loss to Cold Spring Harbor Oct. 13. The Mules were also without the services of running backs Branden McLaughlin and Nick Brown as well as wide receiver Zavion Daniels.
“We have quite a few injuries right now but still came out and gave it our best and I would like to commend the team and our coaches for dealing with the adversity,” Malverne head coach Kito Lockwood said. “Our defense was on the field the majority of the game.”
The Malverne running and passing game was held largely in check by a strong Seaford defense that has limited teams to seven points or under in six games and recorded three shutouts. Senior quarterback Chad Wesley had nine yards rushing a week after running for 43 yards in addition to completing 6-of-8 pass attempts in the Cold Spring Harbor game.
The Mules close the regular season at Lawrence Saturday for a 2 p.m. kickoff. Seaford’s regular season finale is scheduled for Friday evening at East Rockaway starting at 6 p.m.
