Severe thunderstorm hits Nassau, LIRR service suspended

Posted

A strong band of thunderstorms is making its way though Nassau County. Dangerous lightning, torrential downpours and winds in excess of more than 70 mph have been reported.

Because of the inclement weather, service on all of Long Island Rail Road's lines has been suspended west of Jamaica until further notice. For up-to-the-minute service updates, visit MTA.info.

According to the MTA, "the LIRR anticipates the restoration of [morning] rush hour service to Penn Station with some cancellations possible," a statement said on Thursday night. "However, service on the Port Washington Branch remains suspended and may not be restored by the [morning] rush. Port Washington Branch customers are advised to use LIRR train service on alternate branches. Shuttle service will run overnight between Jamaica and Brooklyn."

A severe thunderstorm warning was in effect for Nassau until 6:45 p.m.

The Conference II football game between Elmont and Wantagh was stopped at halftime because of the storm. The Spartans led the Warriors 6-0. Officials said the game, played at Elmont High School, would likely be continued on Sunday but they have not made a decision yet. The game between Long Beach and Valley Stream Central at Firemen's Field was also suspended at halftime. The game was tied at 21.

According to the National Weather Center, winds and heavy rain are expected up until 2 a.m. Wind gusts are expected to be around 25 mph, with up to two inches of rain possible through the overnight hours.
