Smith Street Deli gives back –– big time

Posted

Doug Gerber, owner of the Smith Street Deli in Merrick, recently donated 500 turkeys to Long Island Cares –– The Harry Chapin Food Bank in Hauppauge.

Representatives of Long Island Cares came to pick up the turkeys, and Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray, Nassau County Legislator Dave Denenberg, and New York State Sen. Charles Fuschillo Jr. were present to witness the good deed and commend Gerber for his efforts.

"I have been very lucky from a business standpoint and wanted to just do a little bit for people that don't actually have food to east," Gerber said.

Gerber, of Merrick, has owned the deli for three years since it opened for business in October 2007.

Following the donation, Murray honored Gerber and Paule Pachter of Long Island Cares with a town citation.
