Snow Day for some, but not for everyone

Businesses, hospitals forge on despite weather

Friday marked another snow day for students and staff in the East Meadow School District, but not for local businesses, hospitals and others remaining open.

Though Thursday was a marred by heavy rains and a wintry mix, about a foot of snow dropped overnight on East Meadow, Salisbury and other communities across Nassau County.

A Taste of Home Bakery, located on the East Meadow and North Bellmore border, was open for business on Friday.Fortunately for A Taste of Home, the bakery is situated next to residential neighborhoods along North Jerusalem Avenue. Owners Rose Fuger and Monica Tarantino said there was a considerable amount of customers purchasing breakfast items on Friday morning.

"We are here if people need anything," Tarantino said.
"We are lucky because we are by a neighborhood as opposed to being on a main street ... we get more business that way," Fuger added. Fuger is also the president of the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce.

But with snow usually comes the cancellation of parties, events, and other engagements. That limits the amount of customers who place orders and pick up items to bring to their destinations.

With less than a month left in the winter season, three major snowstorms have already hit the area.

"Certainly, the weather does a big part in making the economy is more challenging," Tarantino said.

At the Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, the highly frequented Emergency Department appears to be in its usual busy state.
"Nothing unusual or irregular," NUMC spokeswoman Shelley Lotenberg said, "a regular day.

As for snow-related incidents, the E.D. reported a handful of minor motor vehicle accidents, and a patient whose finger top was chopped off as he attempted to get a snow blower started.
