Snow in East Meadow: 'much better than last time'

Residents dig out as winter storm hits area overnight

The sun came out on Wednesday morning after another winter storm hit East Meadow and the rest of Long Island overnight.

Though parts of Suffolk County were hammered with more than a foot of snow, total approximate accumulations were about nine inches in East Meadow and Salisbury.

Peter Cipriano, owner of Cipriano Landscaping, Nursing and Florist in East Meadow, was out at 3 a.m. this morning preparing for a morning with his crews to shovel and plow. Cipriano was actually surprised at how swiftly his staff was able to get from job-to-job during the messy morning.

"We are moving too fast," Cipriano said as he worked on Wednesday morning. "Much better than last time."

The East Meadow School District announced at 9 p.m. on Tuesday night that schools were closed on Wednesday, as well as all after school activities and events on district property. The East Meadow Public Library was also closed on Wednesday.

For commuters heading to the city via the Long Island Rail Road, trains ran on a "significantly reduced weekday morning rush schedule." That schedule includes the cancellation of 23 westbound morning rush trains and extremely limited or no train service on diesel train lines, including east of Speonk and east of Ronkonkoma. In the evening, the LIRR said most lines would run on a regular schedule.

State, county and town crews worked throughout the night to clear roads for the morning commute. The Town of Hempstead said on Tuesday that it had 250 pieces of equipment on the roads on Tuesday night and working through the overnight into Wednesday.

Dr. Janine Kelly, a past president of the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce and owner of Kelly Family Chiropractic on North Jerusalem Road in North Bellmore, said she closed her office on Wednesday for the safety of her patients.

"Parking has been minimal since the last storm in the area, so I closed today so that the plows could make some extra spaces for tomorrow," Kelly said.

The chiropractor said she rescheduled her regular appointments to Thursday.
