It has been almost 700 days since the area has received at least one inch of snow within a 24 hour period. However, that might change this Sunday, as a winter storm will impact Long Island.

According to the National Weather Service, snow will start Saturday evening before tranistioning to rain throughout the night and Sunday morning. Then, the rain is forecasted to tranistion back to snow Sunday afternoon.

Total snowfall of 1 inch or less is forecasted with some areas receiving as high as 2 to 3 inches. Total rainfall totals are forecasted to be 1 to 1 1/2 inches. There is a coastal flood advisory for all of Long Island that is in place from 5 a.m. Sunday to 10 a.m.

"Widespread minor flooding is expected in the most vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline," stated in the advisory. "Expect up to 1 1/2 ft of inudation above ground level in low lying, vulnerable areas."

The MTA will be deployed throughout the region, spreading salt and cleaning surfaces of snow.

"Metro-North crews will be prepositioned throughout the system as we monitor conditions for the duration of the storm, with the ability to respond quickly to any issues," Metro-North President Catherine Rinaldi said. "Customers, particularly those in the northern regions of Metro-North territory, should plan extra travel time and use TrainTime for real-time updates if they expect to travel this weekend."

Long Island Rail Road crews will be pre-positioned around the system, ready to respond to any weather-related issues. Customers should monitor new.mta.info for any potential delays or cancellations.
