South Shore Symphony to present old favorites — and a L.I. premier

The South Shore Symphony Orchestra, under the musical direction of Scott Jackson Wiley, will perform at South Side Middle School on March 26 at 8 p.m. The 65-member orchestra will play Moussorgsky-Ravel’s “Pictures at an Exhibition,” “Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7” as well as “Brooklyn-Bound F Train” in the Long Island premier of a piece by Ethan D’Ver that was performed by the New York

Philharmonic during its School Day Concert series last May.

Ethan is a senior at LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts and plans to attend a music conservatory in the fall. His musical inclinations became apparent when he took up piano at the age of five. He later studied trombone and currently plays in both LaGuardia’s Senior Orchestra and its Jazz Band. He is quickly making his mark as a young composer. He received the 2010 Charles Fox Award, presented to a promising composer from LaGuardia High School. Currently, he is testing his teaching skills by mentoring younger composers in the New York Philharmonic’s Bridge program and he’s an active member of Making Score, a program of the New York Youth Symphony that has nurtured his talents for several years. They will premier his new string quartet at Symphony Space in Manhattan

on May 4.

Under Wiley’s leadership, the South Shore Symphony Orchestra has grown to include professional musicians and gifted high school musicians in addition to dedicated amateur players. Tickets are available at the door and are $15 for adults, children under 18 are free and seniors and members of the Rockville Centre Guild for the Arts can purchase tickets for $12. For further information, contact (516) 616-3610 or visit www.sssymphony.org.
