South Side High School students Deana Davoudiasl, Zachary Gottehrer-Cohen, Kyle Holzgruber and Kelsey McKenna have been named Commended Students in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program. These scholastically talented students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2011 competition by taking the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

SSHS Principal Dr. Carol Burris also announced that Zola Ray has been named an Outstanding Participant in the 2011 National Achievement Scholarship Program. This program was initiated in 1964 specifically to honor academically promising Black American high school students, recognizing their potential for academic success in college. Outstanding participants scored in the top three percent of more than 160,000 Black Americans who requested consideration in the 2011 National Achievement Program when they took the 2009 PSAT/NMSQT.
