Family Fun

A Haunted Historic Halloween
Celebrate Halloween as Long Island residents did in days gone by as Old Bethpage Village Restoration gears up for some spooky festivities. The 19th century Halloween spectacle features evening “hauntings,” a séance, ghost story readings, carving Jack-O-Lanterns, a 19th century “monster hunt,” and ghost walk. Also hear the tales of the local grave-digger (who often fired his musket in the air to keep away spirits), among the many family-friendly activities. Also, check out the Baseball Ghost Game on Saturday. Watch as ghostly players from long ago take the field for a good old-fashioned spooky game of baseball.
Friday, Oct. 30, 5:30-10 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 31-Nov.1, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. $10 adults, $20 for admission and haunted house tour on Friday. Old Bethpage Village Restoration, Round Swamp Rd., Old Bethpage. (516) 572-8401.

Dog Days
It’s time for Old Westbury Gardens to go to the dogs during its annual fall dog festival. Stroll through the colorful gardens with your furry friend (leashed, of course) and observe the vibrant fall landscape. There are also many activities devoted to man’s best friend. You and your dog can enjoy games, agility demonstrations, along with a costume contest and parade, at 3 p.m., on Sunday. Participating animal welfare organizations are on hand, with information and displays.
Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 31-Nov. 1, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Register by 2 p.m., Sunday, to participate in the parade. Old Westbury Gardens, 71 Old Westbury Rd., Old Westbury. (516) 333-0048 or
