Stitches from the Heart

Knitting and crocheting blankets of love

Posted

Stitches from the Heart was started by a woman named Kathy Silverton of California. “I started knitting for her 13 years ago, and it just grew,” said lifelong Lynbrook resident Barbara Bernhard, who is now the East Coast representative for the organization.

The knitters and crocheters make beautiful blankets and lap robes to send to premature babies and local hospitals, mostly located in the most needy areas. “We also supply South Nassau with 100 pink and blue scarves for breast cancer and prostate cancer every year,” said Bernhard, who said that her knitting group meets every Wednesday night at the Lynbrook Library.

Joe O’Grady, ex-fire chief Floral Park and founder of motorcade Operation Wounded Warrior, brought the blankets from Centennial Hall, a collection area, and delivered them by motorcade to four military hospitals, including Ft. Bragg and Camp Lejune. This year, about 60 blankets and lap robes were created by the 25 women in the group. “They are all volunteers — anyone can join us during the year.”

Stitches from the Heart is an IRS approved 501(c)(3) non-profit knitting, crocheting, and quilting organization that sends handmade clothing, blankets, and love to premature babies all across the nation. They also have a senior program that helps seniors help others by donating yarn and supplies. For more information, visit www.stitchesfromtheheart.org
