Student artwork from LBHS honored outside the classroom

Two Long Beach High School students were winners in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards program, a national competition that recognizes and acknowledges talent and originality among teens.

Max Tunney earned a silver medal for comic art, while Charlotte Kasper garnered an honorable mention in photography as well as one gold award, two silver awards and three honorable mentions in writing.

The artwork of six students will be featured in the esteemed “Long Island’s Best Young Artists” exhibition, running at the Heckscher Museum until the end of April. Marcella Contreras-Ortiz, Riley Esposito, Angela Maure, Kristen Miciotta, Nina Miller and Tunney participated in a museum visit, wrote artist statements describing their inspirations and created original works of art. Of the more than 311 submissions, only 80 were selected for a place in this prestigious show. Miller earned the Joseph Mack Achievement award as well as an honorable mention in sculpture, and Esposito earned an honorable mention in photography.Twelve student-artists competed in the Nassau Community College Art and Science Competition, sponsored by the Honors Program. Kristel Sevilla won Best in Show for her ceramic sculpture, Max Tunney earned an Award of Excellence in drawing, and Lindsay Kranitz, Caroline Obed and Alexandra Thursland received honorable mentions for ceramics, printmaking and graphics, respectively.

Jordan Torregrosa, a member of the Palette Club, placed in the “Scapes” and “Photojournalism” categories of the Photographic Federation of Long Island exhibit. His photos will be displayed at the Ethical Humanist Society in Garden City and his work, along with that of 6 other Studio in Photography students, was entered in the Photographic Society of America's international competition.
