Students have fun with forensics

Posted

West Hempstead High School students met with two NYPD detectives on Jan. 18 for a lesson in forensic investigations.

Detectives Josephine Curry and Etienne Mauge used visuals and testing materials to describe the role of forensic scientists in investigating crimes. They demonstrated the collection and analysis of fingerprints, blood splatters, footprints and lead testing to identify entry and exit holes and bullet types. Lasers were used to find the angle and point of origination of a possible bullet wound. The evidence collected and analyzed by forensic scientists is essential in developing a case to convict suspected criminals. Students had the opportunity to ask questions during and after the presentation.
