SUV crashes into Pizzeria

Plows into Pizzelli's in North Bellmore

A woman at the wheel of an SUV swerved to avoid another vehicle and plowed into the front of Pizzelli's pizza/deli in North Bellmore at 6:15 p.m. on Dec. 3, according to police.

"She lost control of the vehicle, looking to avoid another vehicle," Nassau County 1st Precinct officer Michael Bentivegna said at the accident scene. "She must've hit the curb and a sign that was there, and then spun out."

The 2003 Jeep Liberty sport utility vehicle crashed rear end-first into the front of the popular pizzeria and deli at 1354 Newbridge Road, shattering the glass windows and doors and the framing.

The building, which has been remodeled over the years, served as the community's original general store in the late 1800s.

Although there are dining tables close to the front, and the incident happened around dinnertime, no one inside or near the building reported being hit with glass or otherwise injured, police said.

"It was one girl driving, maybe in her 20s, not really hurt, but she's on her way to the hospital to get checked," said Dave Marschall, first assistant chief of the North Bellmore Fire Department, at the scene.

"She said her neck hurts," Bentivegna said of the driver, whom they did not identify.
