Teens have a blast tie-dying their T-shirts

The North Merrick Public Library went retro last Thursday, holding a tie-dye T-shirt workshop to give young teens an opportunity to explore their artistic sides.

Twenty-seven kids, ages 13 to 17, made use of squirt bottles and experimented with vibrant colors to design their own shirts using spiral patterns, Z-patterns and other techniques that were taught to them by an instructor.

"They just had a good time," said Kelly Rechsteiner of the Young Adult Department, who helped oversee the event. "Everybody left with their own shirt."

While T-shirts were provided by the library, some brought their own shirts to design, and a few even decided to dye their socks and drawstring bags.

The workshop lasted two hours, and all of the participants left the library a bit more colorful than they arrived.
