They remember

On Nov. 20, the St. Agnes Cathedral Gaelic Society placed flowers and said a few prayers at the Mariners Burying Ground monument, where 139 bodies lie, in the Rockville Cemetery. Along with the Gaelic Society were members of the Lynbrook Historical Society, members of the Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 14 and Arthur Mattson, the author of “Water and Ice.” Mattson spoke about the book, which tells the story of the two shipwrecks that took the lives of the mostly-Irish immigrants aboard.

Coffee and cake was served afterward. Members of the Gaelic Society say they plan to continue to commemorate the shipwrecks and the loss of lives as they have every year around this time.
