Science lessons came alive for third graders at Malverne’s Davison Avenue Intermediate School when four animals from the Teddy Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center in Oyster Bay paid a visit to their school. The animals were accompanied by Alice Bryant, the center’s wildlife care coordinator.
Having just completed a unit of study on animals as part of their NYS Grade 3 science curriculum, the students were able to properly identify the differences between a mammal, a reptile and a bird, as Bryant introduced them to a rabbit, a corn snake, a red-tailed hawk and a great horned owl. They were also easily able to explain to her the difference between a warm-blooded and cold-blooded animal, identify which of the four were predators and which were prey, and distinguish between live bearing animals and egg layers.
