Town Board rejects Harbor Isle project

The Town Board of Hempstead voted unanimously on Tuesday morning to turn down a proposal by Posillico, Inc. and AvalonBay Communities, Inc. to build 142 rental apartments in the Harbor Isle section of Island Park. The $90 million project has taken criticism during the past months.

"The Town Board of Hempstead should be praised for doing the right thing," said Shirley Aldebol, vice president of 32BJ Service Employees Industrial Union. "The community is clear about this: AvalonBay is not the right developer for Harbor Isle and needs to take more responsibility for the conditions at its properties.
