Town Clerk Endorsement

Give Bonilla another term as clerk

Mark Bonilla, the Republican incumbent clerk of the Town of Hempstead, is being challenged by Democrat Steve Turman, a newcomer to the political scene. Bonilla has dedicated the last four years to improving the efficiency and the effectiveness of his office's operations, and we strongly urge voters to re-elect him to a third term.
Bonilla exudes pride when talking about his job. At age 44, he has a bright future ahead of him, but he insists that he's not using his position as a springboard to bigger things. He is doing the job, he says, to offer the town the best level of service possible.
Over these four years, Bonilla has spearheaded two major initiatives. The first is his passport program, which has been recognized by the New York Department of State. The town clerk's office has become the largest passport application acceptance facility in the country.
Bonilla's other major focus has been the effort to localize the state's child safety program. He has brought the program into the schools to create identification cards for children. It's clear that he cares about kids: In his hometown of Bellmore, he coaches youth baseball and basketball.
Making the clerk's office's services more accessible has been a top priority for Bonilla. He will show up at a train station at 6 a.m. to help commuters renew their parking permits, recognizing that most of them can't make it to Town Hall during regular business hours. He is engaging and approachable, and works whatever hours are necessary to help residents manage the complexity of their lives. He also takes his office on the road, to communities throughout the town, by way of the mobile town hall.
The future looks just as bright for Turman, who is only 33. He sounds just as dedicated to making government services - and records - accessible to the people, as evidenced by his strong support of the Freedom of Information laws, and his stated desire to maximize the efficiency of the clerk's operations.
There's no doubt that Turman can do great things in the town. He has brought a high level of energy to the race, and obviously cares about his community. But given the solid work Mark Bonilla has done as town clerk, we see no need to make a change on Nov. 6. Hempstead residents are in good hands with Bonilla, and we urge them to elect him to another term.
