The fifth annual Tribute to James “Jimmy” McNaughton will be held on Saturday, Jan. 23 from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Mulcahy’s Pub and Music Hall at 3232 Railroad Avenue, Wantagh. Cover charge is $20. There will be prizes, giveaways, music and special guests. McNaughton, 27, was a staff sergeant with the Army Reserve's 306th Military Police Battalion, based out of Uniondale. Coming from a family of police officers, he joined the NYPD a little over eight years ago as a member of the first Police Academy class to graduate after 9/11. He was assigned to Transit Bureau, District 2 in Lower Manhattan. He reported for duty in the Army on Oct. 4, 2002. On Aug. 2, 2005, McNaughton’s Unit was assigned a dangerous mission, a task that was between him and other sergeants to take on.  McNaughton volunteered over the other soldiers because they had children and he knew of the severity of the mission. On the mission, he was struck and killed by a sniper while training an Iraqi officer up in a tower. McNaughton was the first New York City police officer to give his life for his country as a soldier in the line of duty while serving in Iraq.
