South Side High School’s English as a Second Language students traveled to Nassau Community College on March 16 to participate in an orientation meeting specifically designed for them. Their visit to the college included a presentation and talks with the admissions counselor, ESL coordinator and financial aid counselor. It also included a tour of the campus.

South Side ESL teacher Virginia Stamatakis said the school should be commended for its continuing strong effort to make higher education a pragmatic reality for all of its

students.

Several days later, the project completed by several of the ESL students placed 3rd in the school’s science fair. Stamatakis said South Side’s tradition of excellence that motivates students to work hard and achieve great academic success is shared by its ESL students, and is what guides them to perform and excel.
