Two nabbed in reckless driving case

A Glen Cove man was arrested in Merrick on Sunday and charged with violating several traffic laws, including driving as fast as 140 mph on the Meadowbrook State Parkway during a police chase.

Jason Denobrega, 23, was apprehended by New York State Troopers at 11:30 a.m., when he attempted to make an illegal U-turn after getting off the Meadowbrook Parkway at Merrick Road and struck another vehicle from behind. Troopers then took him into custody, along with his passenger, Jacob Bloom, 21, also of Glen Cove.

Police said that Denobrega, who was driving a gray Mazda RX-7, was spotted while speeding and committing “several other traffic violations” around the Jones Beach traffic circle at the southern end of the Wantagh State Parkway.

Troopers said they had stopped the vehicle in a traffic lane and were approaching it, with their emergency lights and sirens on, when the Mazda took off at high speed, headed west on the Ocean Parkway beforespeeding north on the Meadowbrook.

Denobrega was charged with third-degree fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, second-degree reckless endangerment and several traffic violations, including speeding. He was held for arraignment in 1st District Court in Hempstead.

Bloom was charged with second-degree criminal nuisance.
