Union control is too strong

The Taylor and Triborough laws were enacted to protect the public from strikes of government workers. These laws have become the Achilles heel, the albatross of the public. They enabled the government employees and the unions to get what they wanted through binding arbitration. Elected officials say the till is empty and deals goes to arbitration. The union always wins.

Elected officials are off the hook and keep the union votes. The union even chooses the arbitrator. This person has forced the public to pay extra to the PBA officers. Why doesn’t the union pay them? Because that wouldn’t increase their pension.

Did you read Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone’s deal with the Police Department? He said he was afraid to go to arbitration as the deal would be worse. $200,000 cops — wow! Other unions can smell the money coming. The Nassau County Police Department has parity with Suffolk so this is a win for them. Bellone created a calamity. How does the public stop this abuse?

Sen. Dean Skelos sees this but does and says nothing. Why is control of the Nassau County Police Department by the union and not the public or even the chief?

The Taylor and Triborough laws’ abuse of the public is a travesty. Are any elected officials brave enough to seek control of public service from the union and the Taylor Law? What can you do about it?
