David Horvitz died on Nov. 29 at his home in Rockville Centre from natural causes.

Horvitz was born in Chicago to Abraham and Eva Horvitz. He spent his childhood in Madison, Wisc., and then spent three decades in Merrick.

Horvitz was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, serving as an instructor in the Army in the early 1950s at American bases in Germany.

Horvitz, known as “Cookie” by his family, is remembered for his incisive wit and sense of humor, his commitment to family and friends, and his generous philanthropic support of progressive organizations. He will be greatly missed.

A private memorial and burial service was held on Dec. 2. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Horvitz’s honor to the Human Rights Campaign, Yiddish Book Center, or to an organization of choice.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Krohn; his sister, Judith Bernstein; his four children, Terry Horvitz, Eric Horvitz (Mary), Dana Horvitz, and Lori Horvitz; his grandson Zachary Horvitz; and his extended family, including Alison, Leslie, Matthew, Scott, and Peter, and their children, Jim, Dan, Rachel, Evan and Hannah.
