A Valley Stream man was sent to the hospital after a fire broke out in the attic of his home on East Avenue on April 12.

It was 2:30 p.m. when the 34-year-old resident discovered the flames and tried unsuccessfully to put them out by himself before Valley Stream firefighters arrived shortly after.

Engine 343 and Ladder 708 were first to arrive as fire crews led by Chief Patrick Scanlon swiftly knocked the blaze down and averted flames spreading further, officials said.

The Valley Stream department received help from surrounding departments. The homeowner, who suffered minor burns on his hands and smoke inhalation, was taken to a nearby hospital.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Nassau County Fire Marshal with the assistance of Arson Bomb Squad detectives.
