Victor Politi to lead NuHealth

Dr. Victor Politi has been selected as the new president and CEO of the Nassau Health Care Corporation. The unanimous decision was made today by the NuHealth board of directors.

Politi succeeds Arthur Gianelli, who resigned from the position in November after seven years. Though hospital and Nassau County officials did not say why Gianelli resigned at the time, Brian Nevin, a spokesman for County Executive Ed Mangano, said that Mangano asked Gianelli to step down so the county could seek new leadership. "With the hospital's struggling finances and the need for a new CEO," said Mangano in a statement. "The board of directors' unanimous decision to select Dr. Vic Politi demonstrates strong leadership as Vic's 20 years of health care and executive management experience will surely benefit the hospital, patients and taxpayers alike."

Politi has served as the director of emergency medicine of St. John’s Queens Hospital, according to a press release issued by the NUMC, where he was also president of the medical staff. He was a medical director and executive vice president at Cornerstone Arts Center Hospital in Fresh Meadows. "There is much work to do at NuHealth and I look forward to partnering with the Board, medical and nursing staff, and hospital workers,” said Politi in a prepared statement. “In the coming days, I will ask the Board to approve a thorough, forensic audit so that we can begin to better address the hospital's struggling finances. Together, we will put the hospital on a path to success that benefits our patients and health care workers alike."

Politi's medical experience also includes serving as a Nassau County police surgeon, and as deputy Nassau County executive of public safety where he oversaw the Nassau County Department of Health and the Nassau County Medical Examiner’s Office. He is also an attending physician at the NUMC. "His multi-faceted background makes him the perfect candidate to bring NHCC out of its financial struggles and into a profitable institution," said Craig Rizzo, chairman of NuHealth's board of directors. Rizzo added, "His past experience not only involves health care and administration, but government, finance and labor."

Politi had been serving as the interim Nassau County police commissioner since the resignation of Thomas Dale in December. To replace, Politi in that role, Nevin said Mangano has appointed Thomas Krumpter as acting commissioner.

NuHealth is a public benefit corporation managing the operations of Nassau University Medical Center, A. Holly Patterson Extended Care and a network of Family Health Centers that bring primary and specialty care out into the community.
