Village of RVC, Molloy College to upgrade turf at Bralower Field

Molloy College and the village of Rockville Centre have teamed up to replace the turf at Bralower Field on Peninsula Boulevard, also known as South Field.

The renovation will begin the second week of December if weather permits, officials said, and will cost about $400,000.

After receiving an estimate, the village concluded it could not fully fund the revamp, so Mayor Francis X. Murray reached out to Molloy College president Dr. Drew Bogner for assistance. The college agreed to contribute $200,000, and the village will pay the other half with funds that had already been set aside.

“He is under no obligation to do so — [Molloy] rarely uses that field — but he has agreed to give us $200,000 to help our children going forward with a brand new turf field,” Murray said, “so we want to thank him for that.”

Though the men’s and women’s soccer teams at Molloy use Bralower Field, community sports leagues use it most. Molloy College accounts for only about eight percent of the field’s usage, according to statistics provided by the village.

“We have had more than a decade of collaboration with the village in the development and upkeep of the fields used by Rockville Centre and Molloy College,” Bogner said. “This has been a great partnership and we are proud to be a part of the village of Rockville Centre.”

Bralower Field has undergone expected wear and tear after years of use by athletic leagues of all ages, village spokeswomen Julie Scully told the Herald. “We’re pleased to have the turf upgrades that will ensure a longer lifespan and more enjoyable usability for our athletes,” she said.
