VSFD warns of vendor extinguisher scam

Posted

The Valley Stream Volunteer Fire Department are warning residents of yet another scam involving fraudulent vendors who are getting store owners and merchants to buy used canisters sold off as fire extinguishers.

The scammers will typically come into a store, show false credentials to the store owner, and offer to do an inspection of their current extinguishers. Next, they will falsely claim that the store owner’s fire extinguisher(s) is due for immediate replacement. The scammers then offer them a “brand-new” extinguisher at a discounted rate for a limited time only. And finally, if the store owner agrees, the scammer hands him or her a used extinguisher taken from a previously duped owner.

“It is important to remember that fire extinguisher vendors in Nassau are required to hold a certificate of fitness from the Office of the Fire Marshal - County of Nassau. There is a photo ID card they are supposed to be carrying,” fire officials said. If you are unsure as to the authenticity of the vendor, the fire department advises that you call the Fire Marshal’s Office at 516-573-9900.
