Election 2015

Walker seeks re-election in 17th L.D.

After serving six years on the Oyster Bay town board, Rose Marie Walker was elected to the Nassau County Legislature in 2009. This November, the Republican from Hicksville is seeking her fourth term.

Her challenger is Dan Devine, a Democrat and also a long-time resident of Hicksville. His career has been in the private sector, working in technical support for Cablevision and CA Technologies.

The pair are vying for a two-year term to represent Nassau County’s 17th Legislative District, which includes North Massapequa and Plainedge, and portions of Seaford, Bethpage, Farmingdale, Hicksville and Old Bethpage.

The area of Seaford covered by the district spans from Brooklyn Avenue north to Jerusalem Avenue, from the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway to the Massapequa border. Areas north of Jerusalem Avenue, in the vicinity of Maria Regina Church, are also included in the district.

The Herald sent questions to both candidates, but did not receive responses from Devine.

Herald: Why are you running for another term to serve in the Nassau County Legislature?

Rose Walker: As an educator, mother and grandmother, and now as a county legislator, I have always taken pride in my desire to help people and to work with others to make our community better. As a lifelong Hicksville and Nassau County resident, I have worked hard to be responsive to the needs of our residents. I am proud of the road and safety improvements we have completed throughout my district and the county, as well as major park improvements. Working together with our fire departments, I have funded a wide variety of projects including training center renovations, LED lighting projects and upgrades and set-up of dispatch offices. Since taking office in 2010, crime is down 25 percent, making Nassau County the safest county of its size in the nation. In my six years in office has a legislator, I have worked hard to serve the residents throughout my district and Nassau County.
